I saw this reference to Pontius Pilate today. It took me a couple of minutes to work out what they meant.

Oh dear me. That's truly terrible. 😂

And I suppose partly because people don't read books any more. Which means spellings like that will spread. 😱

JacquelineHigh · 14/10/2026 11:31

Ouch!

I've just resurrected an old username just to post on this thread. It was used by someone describing their partner as having a split personality!

Daisypod · 14/10/2026 11:32

I actually saw on Facebook someone refer to trickle treating yesterday 😳

herecomestheairfryer · 14/10/2026 11:38

I was quite old before I realized that Pontious Pilate was the name of someone, I thought pontious meant pretentious Blush

JudyTeeny · 14/10/2026 16:31

As a child I always thought he was a pilot.

Same for me. And I thought Silent Night was about someone called Round John Virgin.

JudyTeeny · 14/10/2026 20:30

@FramboiseRoyale that's brilliant! It reminds me of a prayer we said at Sunday School- keep me safe Oh Lord I pray, lest I stumble on the way.
For years I thought it was about a man called Lestye who fell on his way home.

RaraRachael · 14/10/2026 22:35

I don't get it @JacquelineHigh 🤔

italianlondongirl · 14/10/2026 22:42

Say it out loud and then think of a fictional gothic character

PrincessOfPreschool · 14/10/2026 22:42

Took me a while (Jekyll and Hyde)

RaraRachael · 14/10/2026 23:38

Thanks @PrincessOfPreschool. It didn't really work in my accent 😀

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/10/2026 23:40

I thought that "Away in a Manger" was 'A Wayne in a Manger" ( I was brought up in the 70s when it was a common boys name) and DH (who grew up Scotland) thought it was "A wean in a Manger".

I think we just have a whole load of people who have undiagnosed hearing loss….

FramboiseRoyale · 15/10/2026 01:58

@MrsMoastyToasty I love a wean in a manger. Very fitting, too. 😊

Pontius could be mistaken for Pompous easily enough so I can see how that works.

When I was little I always thought Heathrow airport was called Hebrew airport.
I think I'd been learning about the Hebrews at Sunday school.
