Why has 'woman' suddenly become a difficult word to spell?

Has anyone else noticed this? Probably several times a day now on MN, I'm seeing the singular 'woman' being spelled as the plural 'women'. E.g., 'You're a grown women, get over it.' Too many instances to just be typos, and often the same mistake multiple times in one post.

What's going on? 😕

Yes I've noticed this and wonder why so many people don't know the difference.

whattheysay · 04/09/2025 13:00

I see the opposite, people using woman as the plural instead of women. Drives me mad

SoScarletItWas · 04/09/2025 13:00

I agree. I’ve noticed this too. So I am typing woman to see if it autocorrects - no it doesn’t.

EggcornTheEscapeGoat · 04/09/2025 13:03

Glad it's not just me! It's wild. And it's something I've only noticed in the last month or two, maybe? But suddenly I'm spotting it everywhere. Very strange.

My phone randomly "autocorrects" plurals to singular and vice versa. It also randomly "autocorrects" other words to totally different words even after I've typed the right word I wanted.

I think it's predictive text interfering rather than people not knowing the difference.

Sorejaws · 04/09/2025 13:09

Can you show an example?

Really hope this is the explanation. The alternative would just be depressing. 🤣

I've seen this recently too and it really drives me round the bend.🙄

"Women" is plural but idiots are using it as the singular. "Woman" is singular.

It's baffling. Most people know that "men" is plural and "man" is singular and wouldn't question it. Why can't they see that it is the same rule that applies?

Rosesfornoses · 04/09/2025 13:24

I find it really irritating when some posters on the Feminist Boards refer to 'wimmen' rather than women. I have never seen it anywhere but on those boards. We are WOMEN, not WIMMIN.

Can you show an example?

I know I saw an example of it this morning, but can't remember which thread it was on now (naturally!). Next time I see an example, I'll share it here.

I think it's an autocorrect/typo, and it doesn't stand out as being incorrect during an edit.

That has happened to me a couple times. I doubt someone doesn't know the difference between singular and plural.

marshmallowfinder · 04/09/2025 13:51

Oh god, yes. It's just awful. It's surely just predictive text, where the user jabs the wrong word as it's appearing, without double checking, but I'm so sick of seeing such stupidity. They wouldn't write 'a men picked up his bag', would they?!

I was just about to say this. Type in wom and women appears on my phone. I know the difference though and wouldn't accept it.

Ddakji · 04/09/2025 22:29

I would assume autocorrect. Mine is so annoying. It often decides that I want to add “ing” to the end of every verb, drives me nuts.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/10/2025 10:32

Another I keep seeing is ‘worse’ when they clearly mean ‘worst’. I don’t think it can always be down to autocorrect.
