This is the worst spelling I have seen of croissant. I assume that's what is on offer.

I was searching for hotels, and this was in the breakfast section.

OP posts:

Joyous 😂

Reminds me of a waitress in a hotel years ago who brought our meals over and asked which one of us was having the louse agony.

My very dim MIL calls ciabatta key yer batter

theheat · 29/08/2025 19:06

Flaming Yawn and Bone Apple Tea are two of my favourites

I run a cafe and we sell ciabattas, my most favourite pronunciation was chia ba tata but it rhymed with hakuna matata so I am often found singing it to that tune 🤣

I can't figure out what that is meant to be!

Lasagne maybe?

ohpoowhatnow · 29/08/2025 19:44

I’ve heard kwessidilla for quesadilla before

Chersfrozenface · 29/08/2025 19:55

I had no idea how to pronounce 'quinoa' for absolute ages - I'd only seen it written down, not heard it spoken aloud.

Fortunately I've never needed to order it, so avoided making a prat of myself.

It took me a little while to think 'lasagne'!

JustPassingThruHere · 30/08/2025 11:13

Jalapeño pronounced as jowl a pe no ..... no. Just no. I'm not sure what's more annoying. The incorrect pronunciation or the confidence in which it's stated 🤔

I say 'kinwa' now but that's probably because I heard it on a programme. Before that I said 'quin-o-a'. Phonics and all that.

As I once learned some Italian I know about the c followed by the i in ciabatta (and the double t) and that you don't pronounce a hard g in lasagne, but not everyone can know. I wish there were a way of gently correcting folk without them being upset or scathing about cows who say it posh or the corrector seeming to be a bit supercilious.

WickedElpheba · 30/08/2025 11:27

This made me laugh

Pedant5corner · 30/08/2025 11:30

Tag-ya-telly bugs me as does brushetta. Especially if the person saying it frequently boasts about learning to cook from their nonna.

I don't care if someone says Kwin-o-a for Keenwa. I know what they mean.

Flaming Yawn and Bone Apple Tea - I need help with Flaming Yawn.

Pedant5corner · 30/08/2025 11:31

Filet mignon!

TaborlinTheGreat · 30/08/2025 11:33

People have real trouble with quinoa (I certainly do - it gives me violent stomach pains!). I've told dh how to pronounce it a million times and he still can't get it! I think it helps to break it down into chunks so people can see which bit does what.

Qui = kee
No = no
A = ah

But run the no and ah together really quickly so it sounds like 'nwa'.

Obvious to folks on Pedants' Corner, no doubt, but it seems to help some people!

Emptyandsad · 30/08/2025 17:18

Choritso is a bugbear - because it's said by people who are trying to demonstrate how good they are with foreign. I don't mind if it's a strange word and you pronounce it as it's written. It's when you try to show how cosmopolitan you are that my teeth start to grind

Pedant5corner · 30/08/2025 17:50

Choritso is annoying. It's as annoying as brushetta and taggy-telly.

@TaborlinTheGreat , it's keen-wa.

Confused Yes, I know. Did you actually read my post? I was just describing how the pronunciation 'keenwa' breaks down into syllables/sounds, which can help people to get and remember how to say it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/08/2025 19:01

My darling H cannot say mozzarella properly, always Monsterella... 🤣

Pedant5corner · 30/08/2025 19:50

Monsterella! Love it.

@TaborlinTheGreat , I did but I thought it was overly complicated.

It can help someone who finds it impossible to grasp how a word spelled 'quinoa' can possibly sound like 'keenwa'!

Sunshineismyfavourite · 30/08/2025 21:07

Quasant is brilliant!

A friend of mine cannot pronounce latte macchiato - it usually comes out something like matte lachiato. It's her favourite coffee too which is a shame! She never says it the same twice 😅

NoMoreHotHols · 30/08/2025 21:16

Expresso.
