SquonkTheBeerGuru · 14/04/2008 22:29

UQD is right, but we can forgive Nevermind occasionally

NotQuiteCockney · 14/04/2008 22:37

Alright can be one word, surely? cite

UnquietDad · 14/04/2008 22:47

I don't trust Wikipedia!

And yes, Nevermind acceptable in grunge contexts only.

brimfull · 14/04/2008 23:40

As well sounds like one word in South Africa, ("aswell" is dh's nickname for his cousin from Jo'burg as she says it all the time)

Clary · 14/04/2008 23:55

I am a journalist by trade and used to work with another (allegedly) who once memorably asked me "is alot one word, the same as abit?"

Clary · 14/04/2008 23:56

oh also under way is two words not one, but most professional scribes don't seem to know that.

brimfull · 14/04/2008 23:57

I'm not the only insane person then, soon all mywordswillbeone

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 15/04/2008 00:05

Def two words

A lot is 2 words too.

Not alot

NotQuiteCockney · 15/04/2008 08:02

I think alright is ok as one word in conversational writing, not in formal writing.

I know who Bruce Cockburn is, too - doesn't every Canuck? DH quite likes him.

I was recently, on a dancefloor, when Martha and the Muffins came on, to have two British friends (not DH) say 'Cancon!' to me.

Swedes · 15/04/2008 15:02

My pet hate is thankyou.

Swedes · 15/04/2008 15:06

But I quite like aswell, it has a Sralan Sugar quality.

margoandjerry · 15/04/2008 15:15

but just to put the cat among the pigeons, or catamongthepigeons, what about

insofar as

I always get confused. It could also be any of the following:

in so far as

in sofaras

inso far as

insofaras

I think it's insofar as

brimfull · 15/04/2008 15:22

or beable ,I always want to write that as one word.

Clary · 17/04/2008 00:53
