Using "of" instead of "have"!

Why is EVERYONE saying "would of" "Could of" etc???? I will happily let most things go but this one really annoys me for some reason.
There - got that off my chest.

That annoys me as well .

And the expression "off of" really makes me want to scream. DS keeps using it .

I know, that was wrong to say everyone does it - naturally I wont notice the people who say "would have" etc because it looks "right".

OMG it drives me absolutely bonkers. My husband says "of" instead of "ve" every opportunity. Put up with it for 10 years, now DS5 is using it - have threatened to put him on the stairs for saying it! Now I sound like a complete harridan!

I think "would of" sounds common as my dear mum would put it. It also sounds SOOO thick.
