I really dislike 'three pound' or 'it's 15 mile away' - is it incorrect though, or just not nice ?

Incorrect, I think.

Although you would say, correctly, "I weigh 10 stone", not "10 stones". Though it would, unfortunately, be incorrect if I said it .
