I keep seeing plurals like these being apostrophised, especially on Mumsnet. For example, ' there are lots of little Lily's in my daughter's class.' It's driving me absolutely bonkers. Why is it seen everywhere? 😫

Yikes! So the apostrophe AFTER the ‘S’?

PedantScorner · 04/01/2024 15:13

@HoldMeCloserTonyDancer , Mr & Mr Smith and their DC are the Smiths.
Stuck for a name for their house, they called it The Smiths'.
The Smith's implies that it belongs to the smith (blacksmith) not the Smith family.

She also did ones that said “Christmas with the smith’s/brown’s” where there shouldn’t be any apostrophe.

Oh wow this thread is so infuriating…😩🙈😂

Not sure why I've upset you or annoyed you @Chewbecca ? I wasn't thinking of your dh, I'm slightly baffled by your reply, maybe you're quoting the wrong person?

I'm responding to the op who has said that mumsnetters incorrectly place the apostrophe when referring to multiple girls with the same name. Eg Helen's instead of Helens.

Why would you think I'm thinking of your husband? I don't know the fellow

Please don't worry, you haven't annoyed or upset me at all!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 04/01/2024 21:22

is a group of children called Lilly actually a group of Lillies?

I know a Mr and Mrs Woolf. I'm always slightly tempted to call them the Woolves.

I know someone whose dd is called Emily. She calls her Ems for short, but spells it Em's. Drives me bonkers.
