I hate it when people think quotation marks are for "emphasis".

Tommy · 08/02/2008 09:56

have no idea but always wondered as well!

Birdly · 08/02/2008 15:42

I agree with you, Tutter. A friend of mine who is an English teacher does it . It gives me a funny feeling every time I open a card from her!

meemar · 08/02/2008 15:48

I love random quotation marks, they are very entertaining!

Our local Chinese takeway menu includes a

Set Meal for "2" People

Astrophe · 08/02/2008 15:53

LOL at these... "2" people...what's that mean? Perhaps they are saying that there is really only enough for 1?

We had a hell of a time explaining the " " that people do with their fingers in conversation to a chinese speaking friend of ours - very amusing.

PortAndLemon · 08/02/2008 15:57

I had an ex-boyfriend whose grandmother would do that the other way around, so that your first example would be

TO "TUTTER"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

LOVE "GRAN"

which I thought was odd... unless perhaps the entire family were living under assumed identities as part of the Witness Protection Scheme, I suppose...

CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 15:58

pmsl @ witness protection!

Well I really don't think anyone has ever done this to me

Moomin · 08/02/2008 16:00

lol PortandLemon

A have a couple of friends that do this. Maybe they think it looks more like they are actually saying it to you when you open the card?! I think it's very amusing

BroccoliSpears · 08/02/2008 16:00

I was told by a very posh friend once that it's non-U to put quotation marks around a house name.

Mrs J Smith
"Dunroamin"
Daisy Lane
Villageville

VintageGardenia · 08/02/2008 18:03

Not very U of her to have correctted you BroccoliSpears!

my SIL puts them around the pre printed message in the card.

Botbot · 12/02/2008 13:17

Birthday cards from my MIL always have the same format:

Dearest x,

Happy birthday!!!!!!

All our love "as allways"

MIL

happystory · 12/02/2008 13:26

I once wrote an over-enthusiatic postcard to a schoolfriend, full of !!!!!s. She wrote one back - 'Overuse of exclamation points. I know how to react, thanks'

My grandma had random punctuation too.

She once wrote:

'Arrived safely in (Tenby)'

mrsbabookaloo · 12/02/2008 13:35

I'm such a loser. You pedants have made me "laugh" more than anything else on mn today.

LavenderMist · 13/02/2008 19:29

Lots more "here"

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2008 13:54

I love the witness protection "gran"
"Stealth"

WanderingTrolley · 14/02/2008 14:03

I think some people do it because they think it's a way of adding style.

I think such folk are "thick."

lol at 'I know how to react, thanks'

Heated · 14/02/2008 14:07

I'm another one under the Witness Protection with overly excitable relatives; thankfully most by marriage & hoping the gene is recessive

I get:

"Heated!"

Have a 'great' birthday!

Don't eat too much cake!!! (oh the wit)

Love

SheikYerbouti · 14/02/2008 14:08

One of my aunts put the quotation marks around the verse written in the cards

To Sheik

"Now you are old
And out of date,
Remember that corsets
Are £12.58"

Love from Aunty Sheik

That sort of thing

SheikYerbouti · 14/02/2008 14:12

My dad also signs cards from "Your Dad"

Like I'm not sure whose dad he is

thegrowlygus · 14/02/2008 14:12

My mil always puts the dog's name on the end of the card in quotation marks,

love
Mum and Dad and "Joe"

So we have always thought that perhaps that isn't Joe's real name. Perhaps he is under doggy witness protection?

SheikYerbouti · 14/02/2008 14:15

Oh god, signing pets names on cards

We each get seperate Christmas cards from my mother's dogs and she does this curious left handed writing thing when she writes them as well, as if the farking dogs had written them themselves

WanderingTrolley · 14/02/2008 14:17

But do the dogs use random quotation marks too?
