D'you hear me?

NOROvirus.

Originally called the Norwalk virus, after the town of Norwalk in Ohio where it was first seen in 1968.

NOROvirus.

[This has been a public service announcement, thank you for listening]

Pedants' corner : It is norovirus. NORO. Not 'novo'.

Health : Urgent Help!! Runny tummy - but not Novovirus

You couldn't make it up !!!

What a thread juxtaposition..

Elphaba · 05/01/2008 13:24

Lovin your work Badger!

Twiglett · 05/01/2008 13:27

novovirus = 6860 google entries

norovirus = 619,000 entries

But whilst we're here .. it's not A virus .. it is the generic term for a collection of D&V viruses

so one cannot catch norovirus .. one can catch a norovirus

I did ask all about this on my buying into the hype 'slow news day' thread .. but that was before DS started puking to be fair

which is most probably why one can find you Cod hanging out in the Style threads and you find people like us hanging out in Pedants' Corner

although admittedly the Badger is the intersection in this particular Venn diagram

I'm going to install Noro Antivirus in my house.

Twiglett · 05/01/2008 14:43

oh very good threadworm

Lomond · 05/01/2008 14:46

Don't talk to me or you may catch a norovirus !

Tamum · 05/01/2008 14:48

Can I just also mention the use of "the HIV virus" which drives me round the bend? I thank you.

PrismManchip · 05/01/2008 14:57

arf at this
I did not know Norwalk and norovirus were one and the same
Is this the same as 'winter vomiting virus'?

MrsBadger · 05/01/2008 14:59

yes
also 'cruise ship sickness'

OP posts:
2happy · 05/01/2008 15:00

You may, as it lets me neatly add an anecdote of my own - my grandparents recently went on a cruise and (surprisingly enough) both got D&V. Granny returned home proclaiming how she'd been so unwell with "that retrovirus". Uh, Granny, HIV is a retrovirus, I think you mean rotavirus

Flllightattendant · 05/01/2008 15:06

Yes and the juxtaposition of Coddy being anywhere near pedants corner is quite fabulous

RoxyNotFoxy · 14/01/2008 15:53

"Norovirus" is a Scouser's way of giving you the all-clear. "It's norovirus, chuck. Yer okay".
