I not sure what's happening to written English.

I was reading a book recently and lost count of the number of times I was forced to read things like: 'he was sat at the table' in the sense that he was sitting at the table, not that he was placed at the table.

I found it really off putting, especially given that in every other way the book was extremely well written.
