Metric tonnes of fun?

Maybe I'm just old, but I can't see metric 'tonnes' being used to mean 'loads' without a mental wince. I've seen it tons of times, but it just doesn't look right!

"Metric tonnes" is redundant in written form since the word "tonne" only refers to the metric unit. In speech however, it's not redundant as "tonne" and "ton" are usually pronounced the same. Americans sometimes write "metric tons" instead.
