Ok, I'm grumpy and tired but three threads this morning have contained the dreaded "u" instead of you. Please for the love of everything right, write actually bloody words!

Words just seem to be unnecessary these days. I've seen several threads recently that just omit words entirely 'should I go GP?' 'so he went gym after work' 'I told him go school'.

Shudders.

I've just read one of the "ur" threads. Really irritating.

ArtBrut · 27/05/2018 10:41

‘Defiantly’ for ‘definitely’ irritates me more than textspeak — I mean, even if it’s autocorrect, surely you glance back before posting? Or do some people now think it’s a variant form or something?

But I once discovered I’d be branded a ‘snob’ for my LACK of text speak. I had moved to a village in December on maternity leave and texted the organiser of the local baby group to see if it had already stopped for Christmas, so no one had met me, but I discovered years later that my poor one-sentence text was deemed ‘up itself’ because it had capital letters and a question mark.

ArtBrut · 27/05/2018 10:44

BEEN branded a snob.

Grasias · 27/05/2018 10:48

I stop reading at the first U.

Alot really irrationally irritates me. It's two separate bloody words. It's not an autocorrect either.

GnotherGnu · 27/05/2018 10:58

I could understand text speak in the days when you had to use the numbers to draft text, but it seems utterly pointless and indeed dated now that there's a keyboard and predictive text to take all the effort out.

GnotherGnu · 27/05/2018 10:59

The one that's annoying me increasingly is "he's" instead of "his". How could you possibly think that is correct?

chavtasticfirebanger · 27/05/2018 10:59

Soz lolz xxxxxxc

HushabyeMountainGoat · 27/05/2018 11:02

Yes i agree, when you had to keep texts under a certain number of characters or be charged for two messages it made sense to adapt spellings. It is very dated now.

RosieWoodChelt · 27/05/2018 11:05

Textspeak is just Chavland. I despair.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 27/05/2018 11:55

My autocorrect is a twat though, it wants to put IT instead of it and tgat instead of that. I agree I stop reading at the first hint of u. Lazy and it makes you look 14. (You'll get tutted at for saying the c word though Rosie)

The shibboleth about not using textspeak on MN arose from an awareness of users if assistive technology, and the presence of those with dyslexia and those for whom English is not their first language.

It is basic consideration to avoid making it harder for them, by writing in standard English with normal spellings.

OK, people slip up, and predictive keyboard can savage what you meant to say. But the basic presumption that people who can post considerately should do so, is a valuable one and worth upholding.

RosieWoodChelt · 27/05/2018 17:18

I am ready for the tuts OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow. Doesn't hide the truth that chavs exist though and are thoroughly annoying!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 29/05/2018 07:42

I have a new bete noire - "lil". Perfectly well written post apart from the inability to write little.

OP posts:
SilverHairedCat · 29/05/2018 07:49

Ugh, I've been reading the same threads this morning. Lil is particularly vomit-worthy.

missmouse101 · 29/05/2018 08:05

I have been compelled to comment today on curb instead of kerb. Aaarrgh! Yesterday, I couldn’t hold back on brought instead of bought.Confused Last week it was breath instead of breathe! ConfusedConfused

Anything with led instead of laid, of instead of have, or no paragraphs and I can’t bear to read on I’m afraid.

iklboo · 29/05/2018 09:32

Thunder & lightening has been driving me barmy all weekend.

PhilODox · 29/05/2018 09:36

U ok hun? Don't loose your temper now Wink

Or hunni? (ERK, that made my phone judder!)

The 'lil' was a corker this morning, wasn't it? Grin

Beautiful long paragraphs, all well written... and 'lil'! Confused

ThenCameTheFools · 01/06/2018 15:27

I find missing punctuation irksome. I can see however, that the OP doesn't mind that as much as textspeak.

I suppose we all have our foibles. Wink

vinegarqueen · 06/06/2018 01:45

THANK YOU. There's been a lot of "u" and "4" on the AIBU and Chat boards over the past few days, and it makes my brain itch. I find it very hard work to read, especially in posts that go on for about ten paragraphs and have multiple characters, all with fake names.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 06/06/2018 07:29

Typing on an iPad being mine, Fools, just slightly more bothersome than an actual keyboard. But thanks for pointing it out.
