What is the obsession with 'myself'? Just heard someone on the news say, "it came as a big shock to myself". Why not say, "it came as a big shock to me"? Confused

It's dreadful. I was at the dealership getting my car serviced a year or so ago and the chap said to me: 'Could I ask yourself to wait for myself in the waiting room?'.

The Radio4 sitcom Cabin Pressure has a long running joke that the dimwit air steward over-uses “myself” and “yourself” in an effort to sound “authoritative”. Worth a listen-they’re on Audible.

I had a letter from school recently about paying for something and it ended off with "Payment terms can be discussed, please make an appointment to see myself".

I think people think it sounds more polite. It doesn't, it just makes you sound like a numpty.

It's incredibly irritating. But so is the inability to use 'I' and 'me' correctly. I mean... it's really not that hard.

Makes my teeth itch.

I call it the footballer's me, as it was with footballer's I first noticed it. But its use seems to be expanding and it drives me potty. I find it much more annoying that just incorrect use of me/I. I think because people seem to think it makes them sound clever, and if you're going to use 'longer' words to try and sound clever, you should at least work out how to use them correctly!

Even Prince Harry said it when giving the televised press release about their newborn.
