I have started to notice this (to me) new use of tbe word shop. When did this happen.
Until recently I'd have said "Shop IN the baby and toddler event"

Or even 'Shop AT'. Not just 'shop'.

I know I'm an incredibly fuddy duddy old fart but I really can't stand the relatively recent 'because X'. There's an advert that's all 'because roads, because life' whatever and I'm just shouting 'Because roads WHAT?!' at the telly.

StealthPolarBear · 25/01/2018 10:27

Yes I know exactly what you mean. I didn't go out today because snow. Etc

Sorry Stealth. Because busy (aaarrggghh it hurt to type that). Luckily DS12 is a junior pedant and agrees.

iklboo - although the "because roads" construction does sound a bit odd to my ear (because new Grin ), and it obviously departs from the historical syntax of "because" + verb phrase, I think it's actually quite a fun innovation in our language.

I wouldn't use it in formal writing, but just as "due to" can be followed by a noun phrase, why not allow "because" to do the same. Actually, I think this new construction doesn't even need a noun to follow it (I did "because" + adjective in the previous paragraph):
I took the free drink because- duh!
I don't feel like going out today, just because.

Oh I know D3 - I just like more narrative 😄

iklboo · 25/01/2018 17:28

And it does kind of work with other words around it like your examples. Just not on its own with one other word. To my antediluvian lug 'oles Wink

DadDadDad · 25/01/2018 17:56

antediluvian - great word!

iBiscuit · 25/01/2018 23:13

To shop something/one is to grass them up.

I like "because " though.

StealthPolarBear · 26/01/2018 09:10

Yes that's the only context I'd heard it used in this way until recently. And that's a colloquialism anyway isn't it

Yes that's the only context I've heard it in too.

I'm going to shop youse to the bizzies Grin
