Pedants' corner

It's not a typo, you just wrote it wrong

A typo is when your brain knows what you wanted to write but your fingers got it wrong.

"teh" instead of "the", for example

or "it'sn ot" when you meant to write "it's not"

If you spell something wrong or use the wrong word when there's no plausible way that your fingers could have done it on their own, it's not a typo.

If you don't want to discuss the difference between a typo and a misspelling or a wrong choice of word, Pedant's Corner might not be the place you want to hang out.

Pedant's corner is where you'd go to talk to yourself about it, surely? Grin

You know how sometimes you call people by the wrong names?

You say "Claire" because you're thinking of Claire, but actually you're talking to Sophie?

If I type that, it's definitely not a typo. It's my brain that got confused, not my fingers.

I wasn't taught the names of parts of speech until we started to learn foreign languages. I blame Thatcher.

Yup. I'm an MFL teacher. It's very irritating trying to teach French and German grammar to kids who have no idea about the grammar of their own language. I know the KS2 SATS are very unpopular but the SPAG one might make my job easier until they inevitably change it all again next year !

I do fat fingers (aka typos) so often the iPad has learned to recognise them and now accepts them without correcting me!

I've just done a double take at someone writing "claps", meaning "collapse". What's the word for spelling something as you pronounce it (wrongly, in this case)?
