Pronunciation of amateur

It's not 'amacheur'.

Why is this so common nowadays?

As bad is "shtyoodent", really gets my goat

But I've heard it on the bbc and everything.

What is it then ? I've never heard it pronounced any other way ?

It's amateur but lots of people pronounce it amacheur.

The correct way (in my mind) is to split it up, too. A - ma - teur then place stress on the 'teur' part.

Yes with a t not a ch.

I don't think my scottish tongue would get round that . And id definitely get the pish ripped right out me for saying it like that !

It's an American English pronunciation, am-a-tee-ur, which degrades to am-a-chee-ur, isn't it. The UK pronunciation is am-a-tur, which is similar to the way it's said in French.

Where I come from it's "ammituh", same as a device for measuring electrical current.
