Pedants' corner

I hate it when people use a square root sign instead of a tick

Yes, it's very petty but it always annoys me. There's a perfectly good tick available in MS Word so why can't people use it?!

(I am in a waiting room staring at a poster full of square root signs, hence the pointless post!)

But not everyone uses MS Word, darling! There are LOTS of alternatives, and we have Linux and FREE software. However, I don't know where 'ticks' or 'square roots' are hidden - there must be some fonts lurking somewhere I guess.

What DOES annoy me on ours, is the spell checker is American - so it wants 'color' and other words without a 'u', and I haven't found how to change it!

Our first computer was an Acorn A5000, over twenty years ago, and as used in many schools at the time. It had FAR better multi-tasking facilities than computers today, and was easier to use. But it was over £2000, and a colour printer was £600, but that is the price you pay for being an 'early adopter'.

Are you a 'techy' 'geeky' girl? I'll tell you about Acorn multi-tasking, should you ever be interested.

cheers.

No not techy, just a frequent user of ticks!

Bet there are ticks on other operating systems too - you just have to look for them!

Agree that the American English spell check thingy is annoying too.

Where is the tick in Word? I've never found it.

It's in symbols - go to insert symbol. Then you scroll through but I think it's in the 'wingdings' group.

A tick is an "a" in webdings.
