Fruits as plural of fruit?

I expect you will tell me this isn't wrong but it really sounds wrong to me. Americans use 'fruits' as the plural of fruit, but I'm pretty sure we just use the word 'fruit' as the plural. Or we would say pieces of fruit.

Irritating examples:

  • 'funny' pic of a cat sitting in a fruit bowl saying "sorry about your fruits"
  • bugging American student at uni asking "hey, can I have a fruit?" when I had a bag of kiwis. "Yes you may have a piece of fruit" I replied.

Any thoughts or other irritating examples?

Yes I think you're right. In English-type English I think "fruits" would refer to multiple varieties.

Fish and fishes.
One is quantity, the other usually refers to multiple species.

Fruits of the forest?
I think it can be confusing. I say fruits very rarly, really only in this context.
But English changes over time, that it's nature.

Fruits anniys me as does cheeses, breads and soups

AMumInScotland · 21/05/2013 13:17

I'd only say "the buffet offered lots of fruits" or similar, to denote different varieties of fruit rather than a very large pile of apples.

But there's no point in worrying about LolCat-eze, that has very little connection to English Grin

StealthOfficialCrispTester · 21/05/2013 13:20

Id say "different types of fruit"

ArgyMargy · 21/05/2013 22:48

Agree with Somebloke - fruits refers to different types. But consider if you will a fruit machine...
