When someone says your name to get your attention, do you say "What?" or "Yes?"

I have a lovely platonic male friend who visits my house, but whenever my children say his name he replies "What?", not in an aggressive way or anything, but I don't like it. I generally say "Yes?" though occasionally reply with "What" when they are driving me up the wall!

So what do you reply when someone calls your name?

Depends who's saying it and how many times they have gone Mummmmmmmy. Generally starts with Yes and escalates to What? after a while.

If its my kids it's ' what do you want to eat now' if it's anyone else usually, 'what can I do for you/do to help etc?' I'll never use one word if ten will do

I say YES as it doesn't sound so aggressive and rude tbh!

I tend to go 'Hmmmmm?'

For us it's "Pardon?", but "Yes?" would be fine.

I seem to have this annoying instinct to say "Hello?" when someone says my name, and before I can stop myself I've already said it! It's beginning to rub off on the kids too. Oh well, better than "What?"

I say what if it's friends or family. Yes is to anyone else as I feel I have to be polite to them Wink

Dunno what I'm doing in this topic though.
