DS1 5th Bday party and how many to invite from his Reception class

Hi there
We are holding a party for DS1's 5th and this will be the first time I will be inviting people outside my group of "mommy friends". He is in reception and we are going through the class list and he is pretty much saying "yes" to all the names. The party can only be for 20 children and already 8 or so will be from his friends outside of school. How do you get your little one to pick out the names? Do I explain we can only have a certain number?

I know from other parents that not every child in the class are invited to parties (there is 30 in the class). DS1 himself has only been invited to 4 parties himself (which I am inviting to his; my rule is if you say "yes" to a party then you would also want them at your party).

Agree with you about inviting back the ones ds has been to but that's just a polite thing that we do. He is old enough to understand that not everyone can be invited. Get him to list his friends rather than looking at the class list then take the first twelve that he says. Remember that there may be some kids who can't come so have a reserve list.
