9 year old girls

What activities can I arrange for 6 or so 9 year old girls.
I have told dd that there will be no official party this year for her birthday, but she can have friends for birthday tea and we will take her on a day trip the day after.
I feel as though I ought to have some preparations in place and not just leave them to their own devices, but don't know what to do with them!
I want some interesting things that they can get on with whilst i sort food and little dc's.
Any ideas?

Would any kind of crafty activity be up their street? Painting mugs, making friendship bracelets, that sort of stuff?

or maybe get them to decorate little cakes - a couple of bowls of icing and a load of sprinkles and cherries? Then they can eat their efforts, as it were?!!

My 9 year old DD & her friends painted T-shirts, made necklaces & decorated cakes at her party - loved it, & it solved the problem of party bags

I did this for my dd's 10th birthday and was a huge hit

If it's not a "party" as such you could get them to make their own pizzas for tea. Some kind of inexpensive craft activity where they could keep what they make would be a nice touch though.
