How far in advance can I make/ice a birthday cake?

DS's party will be on Friday, but DD finishes school on Wednesday, so I won't have my normal free time at home to bake and decorate the cake. How far in advance can I do this?

I'm planning on making Nigella's buttermilk birthday cake as 12 muffins and one small cake, and then totally ripping off this cake idea.

Could I, for instance, bake on Weds evening and decorate on Thurs evening?

Yeap that will be fine, as long as it has cooled and then you wrap up well inbetween baking and icing

Make sure you put the muffins in an air tight container
