Party bags, not the usual question! I need your opinions please

I have decided to set up a little business selling ready made party bags. I am going to try to make them with nice little bits in, things like handmade bracelets and personalised keyrings. I hope by sourcing the right beads and bits n bobs that i'll be able to sell them for a reasonable price.

Now my question, i'm currently looking at 'bag' options.

I've decided not to use bog standard bags(plastic ones) and would like to use one of the following, which ones would you prefer, or should I offer all options?

  1. Canvas bag - a little more expensive like these
  2. Paper bag with handles like this
  3. Paper bag which can be folded over like this

i'm also thinking of doing wedding ones with activities for children, like clean craft things(as if there's such a thing!!) books etc etc and I thought for these i'd definately use the canvas bags.

I'd like them to be recycled bags and/or reusable like the canvas ones.

All opinions gratefully received.

I hope mn doesn't think it's a ridiculous idea

I know I won't make my millions with this btw, it's more of a hobby/business as I quite enjoy the party bag bit of parties

I can imagine there being quite a lot of mileage in the wedding side of the service - people spend ridiculous amounts of money on stuff for their weddings, and many couples are not parents, so might not have their own ideas of what to provide for children.

The party bags are OK, but I wouldn't pay for pre-filled bags myself. You could personalise them with stickers/messages for each party.

The whole thing will rest on how you market it though. Can't imagine there will be huge profit per bag, so you'd need to sell a lot.

thanks for your reply.

I wouldn't buy pre-filled party bags either but there are alot of people who would as they have either no time and/or can't be bothered!

I know I won't make much, probably, and probably will concentrate more on the wedding idea, as like you say people spend lots on weddings.

Which bags would you use though?!

I like the wedding bags idea. I'd go for a range of options and pries for the party bags, but wouldn't buy them myself. I'd prefer to buy a pack of books and give those out with cake.

I always buy pre-filled party bags / boxes as hate shopping for bits of tat and think it often works out cheaper to buy them done. I wouldn't spend too much on the bags themselves for the birthday party market - cheap and cheerful so either of the paper bag options (aesthetically prefer the ones with handles myself). For the wedding market people would probably pay more and be keen on the craft / activity angle so maybe the canvas bags with some pens inside to decorate them with.

thank you for your replies

I think, having thoughts some more since I posted, that for weddings I should go for canvas and posher paper bags! and parties I think i'll go for the cheaper bags and maybe even buy some plastic ones, and then see which ones sell(if any!!)

anymore opinions gratefully received as I haven't decided 100%

thanks, I know it's not a new thing btw, just think I could do it well. I don't think its a saturated market like selling childrens clothes so I think it's worth a go.

My friend had plain brown paper bags folded down and sealed with a nice big cheerful sticker, ie a rubber duck, a rocket etc. Much friendlier and more personal than the cheap plastic ones and recyclable I like the wedding bag idea, makes the kids feel included in the day too!

liliputlady · 07/03/2010 21:29

Other ideas for the actual bags - I have used pencil cases/tins, purses and children's mugs to put the goodies in, then there's no need for a bag. I'm always on the look-out for party bag items in the sale.

frogetyfrog · 07/03/2010 21:32

Paper bag - but if you can get them, colourful such as green, red etc. My opinion for what its worth.

KnickKnack · 07/03/2010 21:35

FrogInField...you need to pay to advertise your business (as pointed out by someone else on some of your other posts!)

KnickKnack · 07/03/2010 21:37

forgot to add...I like the 2nd option eddas, paper with handles (perhaps personalised)

Eddas · 07/03/2010 21:38

thank you

I've already ordered some stickers with pictures on them which have spaces to write names so that I can use them on paper bags.

I had thought of using coloured bags. I think I might buy a few in different colours to start with and go from there.

I had thought of using different things other than bags but then they become heavier so postage is more. Might be something to think about as I develop the idea.
