i'm sure the received wisdom is to get them a gift each, but i'd also consider a game like connect 4, frustration or Guess Who. Or a boxed set of Roald Dahl stories (can often get reasonably priced at bookpeople) or story CDs.

5 year old boys - mine (now nearly 7 admitedly) likes all things Power Rangers, bakugan, Ben 10 etc. Or go to Tesco and get a t-shirt each. Or Top Trumps each?

I'd get them variations of something similar e.g. books, craft kits

They have some nice t-shirts in H&M for £5

thanks. hadnt really thought of craft kits for a boy so i do like that idea- the same, but different. t-shirts also good. i am nervous of books as dont know what boys like (they are doing percy the park keeper at school but i kind of assume everyone has that at home?)

For twin 5 year old boys I got 2 small playmobil sets (@£6 each) - one cops one robbers - this was big hit

DS is 5 and a bit and currently loves hama beads, bakugan, lego (there are lots of quite good sets for not much £ especially at ASDA etc) also there are some lego board games that are fab - the robot one is about a fiver and is ace.

How about those doodle books? It's possible to buy boys and girls ones so you can give them something similar but not the same. We've actually bought a whole load on Amazon (super cheap) and picked up some coloured pencils and every child's party DD has been invited to in the next few weeks (we've had a sudden rush of them!) will be given one.

www.amazon.co.uk/Girls-Holiday-Book-Ellen-Bailey/dp/1906082642/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=12667 83530&sr=8-19

The above link (if it's worked!) shows a super offer of a girls', boys' and unisex book for under a tenner altogether.

Rosie Flo and Johnny Joe books go down well too IME.
