Alternatives to whole class party for 5 year old?

Last year I did a joint party and we invited the whole nursery class, hired a hall, entertainer etc

DS has just started reception and so far everyone seems to be going for the whole class party option

What cheaper alternatives are there that don't involve me having to entertain 5 year old boys in my home?

take a couple of them somewhere instead - cinema/bowling/ice rink/swimming and for something to eat - there is no rule that says you have to invite them all

You can always send some sweets or cakes in to school, so everyone gets a little treat even if they don't come to the party.
