Oscar themed party for 14 year old dd?

Dd wants to have a big party this year - she didn't have one last year so I've agreed, and she wants to get everyone to dress up (largely because she has a fabulous dress she bought in a vintage shop she's dying to wear!). So I thought of some sort of "Oscar" type theme.
But they are at an age where they aren't quite ready for discos - and anyway there have been hundreds of disco parties recently. Obviously theya re too old for party games or entertainers. But they need to do something! So what could we do? I've got a nice, reasonably sized hall I can use - but apart form that I have no idea.

May be your dd could plan the activities herself with a couple of close friends?

Half the fun of dressing-up parties is getting ready together. Was she expecting to have 30 peopel or 5?

She could - liliputlady - if she wasn't as devoid of ideas as I am!

A small group could have fun doing makeovers and wearing dresses and go out for dinner (or have you serve them dinner at home but in a posh way). No idea for a large group. Will there be boys? What will they wear? 14 yr old girls will have dresses or be happy to spend money on dresses, 14 yr old boys are less likely to have or want suits.

I suppose a barn dance would be totally uncool?!!! If you got a good enough caller, it could be fun - get everyone to come dressed wild West style!

actually one of those boxed murder mysteries could go down well too - lots of dressing up etc - but I think they're usu for max 12 people.

How about a fake Oscar ceremony, they could give out awards to everyone - obviously it wouldn't take all evening but might be a fun thing to do at the beginning/end of the party? We used to get awards for amusing things at the end of the school term, and it might be fun for your dd and friends to think up awards for everyone...

posh table cloths over tables and ribbons on chairs.

get all the guests to vote for various "oscars" (and teh winner of best at making people laugh is... The winner of most daft outfit goes to... etc etc)

have a big red carpet with someone taking "pap" shots.

some cheapy statue oscar type things as prizes.

then some posh looking food and music playing in the background.
oh and apple juice with lemonade makes really convincing champagne

We did a murder mystery combined with a dinner party for dd2 and it went down a storm - but only for 10 people.

Oscar theme sounds good. Could you hire the hall and a huge screen and watch a DVD but also film them as they arrive and show that too?

You could also do a PPT presentation of loads of 'awards' for her and her friends - most changing hairstyle / coolest walk / most likely to break hearts / best comedian etc and get your dp suited up to present awards.

They could also have a 'sit down' dinner - ie a hot buffet but they all go and sit at tables with cloths and flowers to eat it and have v weak spritzers or non-alcoholic cocktails to drink.
