I've left this a bit late so won't have much time to do anything elaborate (even if I could!) Help!

Thanks

Gosh, lots of suggestions, thanks. When you say "sticky-up decorations", what do you mean?

masses of mini smarties looked adorable.

Oh, that sounds doable.

get some ready roll icing. Cut out star shapes and spread out on a sheet of paper, then mix some food colouring with a little vodka (don't worry the alcohol evaporates) ues a small paint brush and flick several colours over the stars, then stick the stars to the cake with egg white or eater. Easy but effective.

sticky up things - they look like coils of springs you get them in cake decorating shops

Ah, will look. More good tips here as well.

Waitrose have a plain 25cm cake - does this seem small for 12 kids? It says serves 20-30 but just can't see how.

That cake would be masses for 12. Don't cut it into cake wedges, cut it into long slices across the cake then into finger slices. (does that make sense??) When teaching parents would always send in 'serves 8' cakes for a whole class of 30 and it's easily done.

Loving the idea of Lego men on a cake!! DS loves firemen so I could get out the PlayMobil...

Oh good, was worried about it seeming mean. Yes little toys - like that idea.
