40th wedding anniversary celebration

Please can anyone help, my mind is (at this point) a total blank!

My parents will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this summer, and my father has intimated that they'd quite like a party (to which he is making a generous financial contribution, in case anyone thinks this is a bit cheeky!!).

It will be at my house, and just family (although this means 3 children under 6 and about 12 adults).

My dad has in mind a really good buffet and nice wine (parents are major foodies, and I love cooking so this part isn't a big issue). However, I'd like there to be a few surprises along the way, or things that are nice to make the occasion a bit more memorable.

Can anyone make any helpful suggestions as regards gifts, decor, food, cake, activities... anything at all really would be appreciated and help to kick off the thought processes!

For my parents 40th wedding anniversary we got them a Ruby Anniversary Rose simialr to this one but bigger. It is lovely. If they haven't got a digital photoframe these may fab presents - if you can get everyone coming to send you good photos to put on the card they will have an instant memory of everyone at the party.

we have just got pics of the GC's done and put on a canvas for my parents 30th anniversary.

do a 'one present per hour' so make it 4 little things and the last thing something big.......worked fantastically at a friends party!
