Aarghhh - DS1 been invited to High School Musical Prom fancy dress party

He's 7.5 and we've never seen HSM (all boy household). He's not into fancy dress (or musicals!) at all and is saying he doesn't want to go. I'd like to encourage him as he doesn't get many invites, so can anyone suggest what he should wear? I've googled HSM images and the boys all seem to be wearing suits. There's no way I'm buying a suit specially - can anyone think of anything else?

Has anyone been to one - is it likely to be mainly dancing do you think? Another big no-no for DS1! (I'm making him sound like a macho boy but he's not at all - just quite self conscious). I won't force him to go if he really doesn't want to - but if I can make it a bit less threatening for him it might reassure him.

Sports kit - basketball in particular. Most boys would be comfortable in some variation of this?

How many other boys are likely to be there? IME they will run around not dancing

Oh, we could do that - thanks! I just worry a bit about the 'prom' part of the invitation - implies getting dressed up surely? Can't see any of the boys in DS1's class getting suited and booted mind you!!
I will do some subtle enquires at pick up time about how many boys are going.

Sneaky enquiries definitely called for. If you can rally a critical mass of boys to go in sports kit then you are sorted
