I like my F-I-L a lot, we're all wondering what sort of celebration to do for him. He and MIL have arranged to spend a night in a posh castle-hotel (he is a medieval historian) but we have to celebrate somehow with him. about a month to arrange, so nothing too elaborate. and with DS1 (4) and DS2 (nearly 2, and Lord of Misrule) taking part.

He and MIL are very modest people, and without big gangs of friends etc, so organizing a "this is your life" type thing or big surprise party would not be on.

we often have nice celebratory dinners here at home and I am a good cook. but we need to do something out of the ordinary to make it special for him

He likes

good food and wine
medieval stuff generally, esp. heraldry
Napoleon

sorry, this is a long post and makes him (and me) look fairly bonkers... but after a couple of glasses of wine with SIL, me and DH were no nearer to inspiration. I know you good MN'ers are magnificent party people so thought I'd run it past you....
