Ideas for a 4 yo boy's birthday

My ds1 will be 4 in mid-January, which is a bit of bad planning on our part to begin with, as it's difficult to get everyone back in the party spirit so soon after Christmas.

Anyway, his actual birthday falls on a Thursday. Last year he had a big party with games, party tea etc. but for a number of reasons I'm not reeeeeeaallllly up for doing that again. Also, the children he's at preschool with now are not the children he will be in reception with, and so I question whether it's a good idea to have a big birthday party with preschool friends that in 6 months he won't see anymore.

DD will be at school on his actual birthday so it seems a bit tight for the rest of the family to go off to London Zoo or sth (which DS1 would love) without her.

Madagascar 2 is coming out at the cinema so I did think that maybe we could collect DD at 3.15 then the whole family could go and see that and then go for pizza or sth afterwards. However, it comes out this Friday, so I doubt it will still be on by mid-Jan, so can't bank on that.

So in short, does anyone have any bright ideas about what you can do for a 4 year old boy on a weekday in miserable weather that includes all the family?
