for DD's 3rd birthday fairy cakes.

Does anyone have any idea how to do it?

I must be insane.

I bought a mini flower shaped cutter, cut out shapes from fondant icing, then slightly folded up the petals, dob of yellow icing in the middle, stuck on the cake with a dab of icing. The cake decorating experts might have some more sophisticated ideas but it worked for DD's christening cake.
For fairy cakes for a 3 year old's party, however, I would just buy those flower shapes you get from most supermarkets!

Are you talking fondant (ie rolled out) icing cut outs, or piping them in royal icing? If fondant ones then they are really easy. Royal icing is another story altogether.

oh, thanks, you two.. yes, fondant ones - was hoping to make them quite 3-d iyswim - the ones that look like they're made up of individual petals.
