Were having a birthday party at the weekend for DD who will be 1! Was counting on the weather being nice (its June FFS!) but it turns out its going to rain. so:-
BBQ is off.
Dont know how im going to fit all of the guests into my small house.
Does this mean I now have to entertain the kids? If we were outside they would be able to play.
Has anyone got any ideas on what to do to entertain them??

I'm having the same trouble mumbear It's my DS's party to celebrate his 3rd birthday on Sunday. BBC says "heavy rain" . We were going to have a picnic at the local park. I've got a teeny tiny maisonnette and I'll have to squeeze in 16 children and their parents! I really thought the weather would hold out for us too. I'm going to keep checking the weather. See what it says on Saturday.
If bad, I'll have to tell half the guests it's cancelled and have the other half in my tiny flat not sure it's going to work though

We're in the same position. DS2's party is on Saturday and the forecast says rain. Luckily we've booked a venue with indoor and outdoor areas so they'll all just have to stay inside.

LyraSilvertongue · 19/06/2008 09:21

I'm not sure I trust the BBC forecasts. They were predicting sunshine one day, then rain the next. They frequently seem to get it wrong.

SheherazadetheGoat · 19/06/2008 09:27

didn't seem to make the floor slippy but then we have rugs.

someone suggested getting modeling balloons so they could have a game of hitting the bubbles with the balloons. i wasn't organised enough to get them.

tbh 1 year olds don't need a whole lot of entertaining. more referreeing.

mumbear · 19/06/2008 09:29

Thats what im hoping LST that theyre wrong about it. But its just so near the date now that theyre not even specuating. I dont want to cancel anyone. They are people who have been special in DDs life. Ill just have to cram them in!!! Does anyone usually play any games at a first birthday?

It depends how old the guests are. 1 year olds will not sit still for pass the parcel and they would be too young to understand the rules to games like musical bumps etc.. I wouldn't bother with games. Just put out lots of toys and books. It's a great excuse to catch up on gossip with the other parents

FruitynNutty · 20/06/2008 09:03

Oooh, the weather is starting to look hopeful!

dizzydixies · 20/06/2008 09:05

is there not a community centre or church hall you could hire near by? they're normally very reasonably priced and all you would need to do is play some kids music and chuck in some balloons

Purlease · 20/06/2008 11:40

Okay assuming BBC have got it right, I am in the same boat. We have a suitable space indoors but any more ideas on entertainment. Pass the parcel might take all of 10 minutes. Pin the tail on the donkey will be another 5 minutes. eating and blowing out candles on cake - maybe 15 minutes. So what do we do for the other hour and a half. Children ranging between 3 years and 7 years.

Purlease · 20/06/2008 11:43

From what I remember 1 year olds are a bit easier to entertain - not quite so demanding. Balloons, blocks, cars, dolls etc strewn around the place and leave them to it.

Clary · 20/06/2008 22:06

yeah I would look into emergency hiring of church hall or similar.

Mind you they get booked up this time of year - with weddings I think (I know to my cost as this is birthday season chez Clary).

1yos don't need any kind of entertaining ie they won't play games not at all. They will just toddle about and fall into the balloons and play on the ride-ons in the garden etc.
