Restaurants / theatre productions for 50th

It's my bf's 50th in a couple of months. He is considering a meal out for extended family - so there could be 10-20 people I'd guess. He was quite taken with the idea of somewhere where they cook food at the table maybe. Or maybe somewhere bbq-y would be good - he's a committed carnivore. He's got a hearty appetite and a lovely of cocktails... Has anyone got any recommendations for something that's got great atmosphere / not eye wateringly expensive, and is either central London or to the south of London (but not beyond M25)?

Also I was thinking of tickets to he theatre - quite fancy something different, rather than a big name production - again, any recommendations?

Thank you so much in advance!

I don't know London, but where I live, there are two or three Brazilian Restaurants, where they continually carve additional meat and top up your plate at the table.
So, perhaps try googling 'Brazilian Restaurants' and the location you need ?

The stage show Hamilton is excellent if you're looking for something a little different - like Eminem meets the West End. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very clever - as did my teen DD. Have a look at clips of it on IMDB and/or YouTube to see if it's what you're after.

There is a meat focused restaurant on the river near Richmond bridge. Just walked past it the other day. Can't remember the name but can find out if you are interested.

Thanks - yes, I'd be interested. I'm a vegetarian, so I know nothing of meaty restaurants 😂

Cabaret at The KitKat Club is absolutely amazing

Cynic17 · 09/02/2025 14:50

I'd second either Hamilton or Cabaret, but literally depends on your taste.

For something a bit more quirky (if you can get tickets), Operation Mincemeat is brilliant and hilarious.

@CatsLikeBoxes
The restaurant is called Gaucho. It overlooks the river near Richmond Bridge.

I know I’m a bit late but have you looked at Benihana? There are a couple in London including Covent Garden & Kings Road. Fun Japanese teppanyaki restaurants where you sit round a big table watching the chefs bbq in front of you.

If you’re looking for steaks then personally I would go Hawksmoor over Gaucho - Gaucho were great when they first opened but not so good after the chain was taken over a few years ago. Or Berners Tavern which is fabulous but not sure about bigger groups.

For bbq The Big Easy in Chelsea is a staple and good party packages, Bodeans in Soho & Covent Garden is excellent but again not sure about big groups

Theatre is taste dependent, eg some people dislike musical theatre - not enough info in your OP to make suggestions.

The best BBQ food in London is Smokestak in Shoreditch, absolutely incredible.

We haven't been to the theatre together, but from the things he's mentioned in the past he seems to have been happy to and try out a really wide variety of things so I'm happy to hear any recommendations - it can be in smaller theatres too. I'm open to any ideas

I was coming on to say Operation Mincemeat and a PP has beaten me to it. It’s hilarious and touching and suitable for all ages.

heinztomatosoup · 15/02/2025 23:23

Smithing different I recommend Choir of Man

Theatre-wise it seems that you’re south/south west London - both Richmond and Wimbledon Theatres often have plays/musicals that are either just about to go on or just coming off the West End and at good prices, but they’re usually just for a few nights.

As for what’s on now, I’m not a big musical fan but as others have said, Cabaret is brilliant. I’ve just bought tickets to see Sean Hayes ( Jack from Will & Grace) in Good Night, Oscar and am itching to see Inter Alia with Rosalind Pike. The Deep Blue Sea is also meant to be excellent

I love a murder mystery so also Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution is great and so well staged, and if you haven’t seen the Mousetrap yet then that’s a must.

Thanks - I like the sound of witness for the prosecution, especially as it sounds a little bit different with the setting.
