I'm still dithering about 7yo girl's birthday present. What do yo think of this?

I've got a plastic sewing box and filled it with coloured thread reels, needles, tape measure, scissors, elastic. I will try and get a "My first sewing" type book to go with it it. I'm a bit of hoarder where fabric etc goes, never know when it might be needed for homework! I was thinking of adding some pieces of fabric and maybe some buttons from my collection, so she has what she needs to make some dolls clothes, but these would obviously be things I "had" rather than things I "bought" iyswim. Would you think that was naff? Or is the whole idea naff? Girl in question already has a house full of toys and books, mum is not happy about Bratz, HSM etc and they do do lots of crafty things and baking etc.

My mum made up a box like this for me (possibly when I was a bit older) and I still use it all the time. (For repairs if not for creativity )

It sounds lovely if she's into that kind of thing. Woud have been my idea of hell as a seven year old. I did and still do hate sewing.

My dd (7.5) would swoon with joy. (And indeed did, when my mum gave her something not quite as complete as that, for her 7th birthday.)

As it is a question of personality, it would be very easy to ask the girl's mum - if you'd asked me, I'd have given the response above!

Does the girl have The Great Big Glorious Book for Girls? My dd was given that too, devoured it, and within a week she announced "I've taught myself backstitch and look, I've made these cushions" [4 inches square, made from scraps of old raggedy tracksuit trousers, and stuffed with cotton wool. All while I wasn't looking]
