Need to make a chess board birthday cake!!??

I have been asked to make a birthday cake for FIL for his 60th. He's mad on chess so MIL has asked if I could do a chess board. Wondered the best way to do it? Any tips?

sugarpaste? you can get it ready coloured so could do black and white squares quite easily - could mould a chess set or put a real one on top?

Was hoping to get out of cutting out 64 squares but I guess not! Will use a real chess set. Life's too short!

Hey, wow! Squares of dark chocolate for the black squares! That sounds a great idea.

and squares of white chocolate for the white ones... that way it'll be level.

green and blacks do individual squares of white and dark choc - woul take a while to unwrap 64 but would look good

Will go and have a look at the Green and Blacks squares. The Google images are useful. Might not be as bad as I think!
