Edible Spiders - best way to make ?

Right. DS is 4 in May and having a joint Spiderman themed party with another little boy from pre-school.
We wanted one of the activities to be assembling an edible spider...but most of the "recipes" I've found online seem to be more geared towards an adult knocking a batch out to be admired and then scoffed by the children! Does anybody have any tried and tested methods?
In case it helps, most of the ones I'm dubious about are marshmallow body, sticking in strawberry laces (is marshmallow not too squidgy to pierce?) for legs, pouring over melted chocolate (potential mess and hotness issue) and putting M&Ms on for eyes. Also it seems to be a very quick process, I was hoping for more of a laborious method which would require silence and deep thought
Thanks for your help !

small fairy cakes as the body , strawberry or liquorice legs smarties and a small drop of butter icing to stick on for eyes. Or give them butter iced fairy cakes and let them have fun with decorating the bodies, sprinkles, small sweets etc

Can't you just deepfry them? I beleive they go lovely and crispy

I'd go for fairy cakes, black icing and licorice sticks with smarties for eyes to be honest

Nothing else for it, I'm going to have to do a Test Run! I do like the idea of buns though rather than marshmallows - would solve my piercing problems easily enough. Thanks very much (PS. please look out for my other up and coming thread about Presents For A Four Year Old Boy!)
