DH's 50th is New Year's Day!!!! Help me make it special

Looking for ideas/inspiration for my DH's 50th birthday which is next New Year's Day. For those with DH's that age what did you do to celebrate? I have been looking at booking a cottage or lodges for us and the immediate family (10 of us plus the dog) but because of the time of year most of the ones I like have had extortionate costs. Help me please.

What day of the week will it be?

NYD is a Monday next year and DH will be back to work on the Tuesday

Are you sure he wants to do anything? "Special" or not, not everyone likes a fuss. We are both over 50, and certainly there were no celebrations either time because an adult birthday is just another day. I have always told my husband that if he were to ever organise a party for me, it would be instant divorce - and I mean it!
