Secondary school prom nights are over the top

Definitely a first world problem here, I know.

Bought a lovely dress (plus alterations), new shoes and bag plus, of course, the prom ticket itself. Instead of just being dropped off by your mum in your Ford Fiesta and running off to find your mates, the arrival has turned into an event by itself. Parents arranging for classic cars and jeeps (you get the picture) , a crowd of parents and onlookers to clap and photograph as they arrive, a red carpet laid out by the school for groups of friends to do a walk of fame and this is all before the party has even started.
DD is part of large friendship group who have broken up into small groups for the purpose of arriving and have forgotten to include her. My DD is really upset and tells me it is out of the question to arrive on her own. I feel really sorry for her and wonder if you think these prom evenings have become over the top ?

Well, what you describe at that particular school sounds like it, but there are thousands of schools that don't have red carpets / parents standing round the entrance / people arriving is hired vehicles.
