I really really really cant face making one this year , although I really wanted to make a stack of presents in icing just like the one in the middle here , its too much work now. I also drove myself half mad making dd1's 1st birthday cake 3yrs ago and its all on archives for everyone to see how !!

Ive looked on all the websites and M&S & Waitrose needed to know Sat just gone , (although do I really need to spend £40 on a cake for a family party ), so now Im stuck and I used to be really good at sorting these things . (Is this a 2 kids mum thing???)

Whats Asda, Tesco , Sainsburys, selection like right now, any pretty girly ones ??? Cant face going around today , have very docdgy tum and the thought of looking at any food is sending me skywards!!!

Best sort dd1's cake now eh for 4 weeks from now !!!!

There are loads of cakes out there! I'm sure DD2 wont notice if you've made the cake from blood sweat and tears, or if you've bought one!! She's really not going to give a flying hoot really!

Lots of girly lovely cakes in Asda. Go check them out. £40 for a cake is far too much when DD2 isn't going to appreciate it. If you really want to get her a special one, get a nice for her and a general one for the family to munch on.

Hope your tummy's better soon too!

Last few birthdays for the older DS's we've gone to Tesco and got one of those cakes that you can have a photo put onto with edible icing/pring - the Ds's have loved them as they were "personal" to them

tortoiseSHELL · 13/08/2007 11:10

I had to buy dd a cake this year, because of unforseen circumstances, and was not very hopeful of finding one, but if you've got a big Tesco, they do have nice cakes - I got a big round one, white icing with a pink flower iced on it - I'll put a pic on the profile (I decorated the board with stickers, but otherwise is as the shop sold it). It was about £7.99

at £40 for a (relatively simple to make) cake

I am soooo in the wrong business.

Melsy Sainsbo's do nice cake with lots of little fairy cakes round it, quite sweet and perfectly fine. Or yes, those asda ones with a piccie are good.

tortoiseSHELL · 13/08/2007 11:14

There's a pic on my profile now - it's pink not white icing, but it was very nice, a sponge cake, so nice for kids as well. Tasted yummy!

melsy · 13/08/2007 11:15

I did that the last 2 yrs for dd1 , but knowing me I'll make that into a mare because I cant quite get the design I want for the top !!!!

May be I should just do the same again for dd1, I usually buy lovey matching candles too.

Think this is the melsy with no sleep worrying!!! Things might look better tommorow after a better night !

Rg I know you are totally right and dd1 didnt know I worked myself into a frenzy for her, I think what they appreciate more is a non grumpy mum and a happy time !!! BUT I just love those pretty pastel cakes !!!!

Melsy, not thought about cake! DS2 is 1 on Sunday. We are having a bbq for the family. Need to completely sort out the garden and tidy up downstairs, cake will either be a small brought one or if I get time, I'll make a sponge one.

Nemo2007 · 13/08/2007 11:24

WE had same cake as tortoiseshell for DD1s 1st bday as was also mil 62nd bday. Was lovely cake aswell!!

hockeypuck · 13/08/2007 11:27

melsy M&S do a nice one in store, it's round and pink and has a cute little chubby fairy sat on the top of it made from fondant icing, iirc it has sparkly glittery shimmer on it too. £9.99.

I'm thinking of buying it for my dd's 5th birthday in 2 weeks, unless she wants homemade in which case it'll be pink iced ballet shoes made out of swiss rolls and pink fondant icing, shouldn't take too long, but I agree much to think about with a bad tum.

Had a look at Tesco ones on sat and they are all small-ish and a bit dull, but this M&S one was lovely.

Clary · 13/08/2007 11:30

actually melsy I am loving that present stack one, may try that for next b/day if I can talk them out of their usual pirate ship/Dr Who/princess castle requests.

Buy a plain cake from Sainsbo's and ice with ready made fondant (trans fat free now) and colour some spare bits to make balloons. Write her name in writing icing and it'll be fab.

melsy · 13/08/2007 11:38

Its gorge isnt it clary lol yr sucked in now to its pretty pastel loveliness , BOO HOOOOOOOO Im too late for sat, I quite like the brown one for dd2's b'day though !!!

Ok so need to take a look at the fairy one in m&S (good price too),although that might work mre for dd1 and a look at Sainsb'o !

Its party central eh bug this weekend, got soo much to sort out too, spent 2 hrs sorting all the toy boxes in the conservatory last night. mil is making 100 bridge rolls !!!

Sorry to hijack thread, but it just made me realise how soon my DS's first birthday is and my complete lack of cake! He is one this week and I need to get a gluten-free cake - is it possible to get one that also looks nice??

LucyJones · 13/08/2007 12:18

Is there any chance some kind family member would take pity of your sleep deprived state and sort it for you?

melsy · 13/08/2007 12:27

unfortunately not lucyjones everyone at work this week.
