Hotel for special birthday in Lake District.

Can anyone recommend a good hotel for a special birthday next October in the Lake District? Spa/swimming pool would be nice. Nice log fire in evenings and lots of activities to do nearby? For 2 couples.

Definitely have a look at Newby Bridge. It has log fires and a lovely pool. It's very close to the Lakeland Motor Museum, the aquarium, Lakeland Miniature Village, lots of good walks and there's also canoe, kayak and bike hire nearby.
I know that Low Wood Bay has just got a new spa. I haven't tried it out but it's part of a group of 4 hotels with a very good reputation.
The Swan Hotel has a spa and had a very cosy homely feel. I can't remember if there was a log fIre but it's a lovely place.
