1940s party - fancy dress costume ideas please!!!!

DH and I are going to a 1940s party in a couple of weeks. Can anyone suggest some easy to do costume ideas for us both?

To make things harder, I am on the larger size (20/22) so finding something that will fit and not look totally horrendous is proving tricky to say the least!

Preferably something that is connected for us both - was thinking French resistance but any one know the sort of thing we could wear?

How about This sort of thing from Ebay?

High heel shoes, black eyeliner line down back of leg, hair in rollers / headscarf?

Dh needs something military? or a sharp suit with trilby a la David Niven!

trench coat with the collar turned up and a beret for you
sharp suit or overcoat and a trilby for DH
the rest is up to you re makeup, props and ghastly Fr accents...

Or navy boiler suit and a headscarf as a munitions worker ?
