What makes a good 40th birthday party?

I'm helping a friend to organise her 40th birthday party in a couple of months time & just wondering what people have experienced at other 40th parties that have worked well (or to avoid!).

Likely she'll have a band as well as a DJ & probably one of those retro sweetie tables. She'd also like a photo booth but they're expensive & not sure if they're worth it - thoughts?
