The Tesco £18 one is meant to be very good for parties.

hana · 07/12/2006 13:56

well for a party I would buy the cheaper one
folk won't know and if they do.....it's a party!
tescos often have champagne on offer or other supermarkets

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 07/12/2006 13:59

hmmm, well tbh a good cava is better than a cheapo champagne imo.
how much are you buying?
Tescos are doing a case of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Non-Vintage Champagne for £153.56
Case of 6 x 750 ML Bottles (i.e. £25).

that would be my choice
Laurent Perrier is nice too, I will see if I can find that cheap somewhere

clumsymum · 07/12/2006 13:59

Definately, for a party buy a 'budget' champagne, sainsbury's own or M&S oudinet are pretty good for the price.

At a party people don't take that much notice as long as it's fizzy and not too sweet. Lots of people don't seem to like it anyway (fools, but more for me!).

We have bought a Good bottle of Veuve Cliquot to share between dh and I when ds has gone to bed on Xmas eve.

Buy a cava if it's for a party. I love champagne but Tesco Finest cava is scrummy and much cheaper. I really wouldn't spend that kind of money on champagne for a party. And I'm a real wine snob!

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 07/12/2006 14:01

aha! Tesco have:
Laurent Perrier Champagne Brut Non-Vintage 750ml Special Offer Per case: £99.00
You save £49.09 off our original price
Case of 6 x Bottles (equivalent to £16.50 per bottle)
now that really IS a bargain....
will look for some cava, hold on

Blackduck · 07/12/2006 14:01

Buy proseco (italian fizz) Oddbins do a lovely one for 5.99.....and it doesn't give you the champange hangover...

piglit · 07/12/2006 14:01

But you can get good cava for about £7 a bottle. Don't waste your money!!!

oranges · 07/12/2006 14:02

SOmerfield own brand champagne - around 16 a bottle, came in first in a blind wine tasting, beating posh brands like Moet Chandon. Though I'd serve cava for a party too.

WhenSantaWentQuietlyMad · 07/12/2006 14:02

For those who buy the expensive stuff, which brands are really worth it?

I have to admit once or twice noticing a really nice champagne, but then I am really fussy.

Like you say, most people say quietly "I don't like the stuff, too dry"

JackieNoHoHo · 07/12/2006 14:04

Or an Australian sparkling one - some of those can be good.

nailpolish · 07/12/2006 14:05

i really really really really like M&S Cava

very good for parties

cheaper than champers too

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 07/12/2006 14:05

I think champagne is very much a matter of taste.
as far as the non vintage stuff is concerned, I like Laurent Perrier and Veuve Cliquot.
not keen on Bollinger or Moet.
M&S have Cava (brut or medium dry) for £60 x case of 12. I reckon that's probably a bargain

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 07/12/2006 14:07

one you can pronoounce

bollinger taittinger
moet and chandon

all traps

bundle · 07/12/2006 14:08

apparently in a blind tasting on some programme the other day all the "best" ones were supermarket ones, esp Sainsbury's. I like prosecco too. slurp.
