Party bags/party favours

I am trying to understand the etiquette of party bags for children's parties and am completely baffled. For a 6 year olds birthday how much would you spend on the party bag? (probably going to be about 20 children at the party)

no more than £1 a bag tbh

I think parties cost enough to begin with

even though you want to not do it .. unfortunately the kids expect it

have previously done a book .. (check out the book people) but probably at 6 they'll want the plastic crap

Tesco, Poundstretcher, Poundland, Stationary box, asda etc. do packs of toys and stationary that can be split up. My favourites are gel pens and stickers, or a note book and pencils. Bugger ettiquette and spend what you want.

I do mine in paper cups (poundstretcher) wrapped in cellophane, poly bags or paper bags are fine too, get kids to decorate them. Individual books (split up sets) are good too.

Sod party bags. Piece of cake and a balloon and just smile sweetly when questioned.

It doesn't have to be a party bag. It could be a small wrapped gift. For example all the little girl's at my nieces partys got parasols as it was oriental themed. It might be easier than hunting around for lots of little things

DS1 has been to so many parties - loves openbing the bags and seeing what's in it and then discarding the lot. So I've learned to have less but something I'd wish my son came home with. Here's some ideas which have worked:

Stickers
A good chocolate: little footballs for a footie party etc
windmills
Bouncy balls can work
A felt "stamper" pen or a gel pen
some crafty things - I buy from an E-bay shop
toy cars - boys

or
One present in a lucky dip plus a piece of cake

Recently a good few parties my lo's have been to their hasn't been a party bag, but a present. This has been anything from a small my little pony, teddy bear, book, little handbag etc. I'm having a party on Tues for my ds (4) and dd (5) and have ordered packs of 10 books from the book people for £10 a pack. These are books that normally cost about £4 - £5 each, but work out at just £1. I feel happier that the children will take home something of use rather than a bag of plastic crap.

For dd1s party today (mainly 6/7yos) the girls got a hair bobble/clip set and the boys got a pencil case/pens (asda smart price) and added cake/choc lolly thing/christmas cracker

went to one a couple of weeks ago and they got a kite each
