Organising a small 5th bday party

Hi All,

DP and I are currently trying to organise a party for DSS's 5th birthday. We can't invite his school friends as his mum does school pick ups / drop offs and we have no way of asking the children as mum won't help / remind anyone. DSS knows about 6 children where we live so it'd be a pretty small celebration whatever we do. Anyone any ideas of how we can do it and how we can make it special for DSS?

If he can name the children from school he'd like to invite, could you not ask the school office to ensure the children get their invitations? Or is it likely to lead to further upset with mum?

I find that once I have a theme, parties get easier to organise, especially if you can adapt some games to that theme, and find a craft activity. We did dinosaurs for DS2's 4th birthday - some good mask kits from Yellow Moon.

I would explain to school. They are used to this kind of thing.

Is this his only party, or is mum doing one already that will include school friends? If so, he probably wont want a repeat of what she is organizing.

Maybe focus a party around what he's interested in. Some we've had:

soft play party
fireman party (with visit from fire brigade)
creepy crawly party
football
trip to local airfield

Felix unfortunately Mum's not organising anything.

Tbh I think inviting school friends is not an option as it would just make things worse with Mum.

A theme is a good idea. He's currently Despicable Me mad so perhaps we could do something to do with that. Would it be really rubbish to go to a soft play centre with his 6 friends from here? There's a really good one not far from us but we rarely go as it's quite expensive compared to the others around here.

DD just had a 5th birthday party with a Minion (Despicable Me) theme. We found a place which hired a Minion outfit and DH dressed up in it and went out to greet the kids. They loved it and it cost about 30 to hire from a place that also hired bouncy castles etc. We found it on the internet. Might be worth thinking about as presumably you could combine that with a soft play party (which is a great idea - soft play goes down a storm)

Oh and if your cake baking skills aren't great, ASDA does a pretty good (if a bit small) Minion cake. It would be easily big enough for 6 or 7 children though.
