Do 4 year olds need organised games?

Looking for some advice from experienced party throwers/go-ers!

It's my four year old son's birthday party and I am thinking of hiring a big room which is attached to a playground/greenspace/has some animals etc.
I was hoping that they wouldn't need much in the way of organised games - just lots of balloons and some toys out and around. Party food/drinks out too. What do people think? Do you think more organised stuff is needed?

It will be March so could be nice weather but could (more likely) be freezing and rainy....thanks

Sounds about right to me and lucky to have good outside space. In similar events a couple of dads or older boys have organised football if necessary and also a pinnata (sp?) went down very well.

Yes you do need an activity of some kind, otherwise the four year olds will be bored and end up fighting or making their own mischief. Dealing with childish disputes is more work than organising games.

When I have been at parties with no organised activity the chidlren get bored and have miserable time. It doesn't have to be expensive and simple party games are often enjoyed.

1. musical bumps
2. musical chairs
3. pass the parcel.
4. musical statues
5. pin the tail on the donkey.
6. general disco dance music

Not necessarily in that order. You can use general back ground music when you are busy putting cake into party bags.

There is no need to be elaborate. I have been to parties where there have been magicans, but hiring an entertainer is expensive. Children are just as happy with simple entertainment.

Allow half an hour for food and party cake and time to clear up after wards.

Oh thank you! I am somewhat nervous of organising lots of children. We have a bit of a mixed age group with cousins and friends' younger children, but will have a go at some games. With musical bumps and statues do you make them 'out' or do something else?

The children who are out often help with spotting the other chidlren who are moving. Sometimes parents are a bit stricter with the older children than the younger children.
