... those edible icing decorations like on ebay \link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Lion-King-Edible-Icing-Cake-Decoration_W0QQitemZ8257963591QQcategoryZ57211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem\here} that cover the whole cake. Are they really gross? It feels a bit like cheating too! DD has requested a lion king cake but I don't know if my limited skills are up to it.

If you bought a cake you'd have something like that on the top - seems fine to me and soooo much less hassle!

Yeah that's what I thought ... not a great fan of bought cakes generally, they're always so sickly but I might give it a go, thanks.

Bamboo, did you use one of these? I've just seen the ebay site and seen a Thomas version of this. It seems perfect for me as I have no baking skills and could do without the expense of having one made.

i've just bought the rice cake rounds from this seller for dd1 bday fairy cakes - would defo recommend - very quick and helpful service -sends all directions for applying to cake. I ordered mine and paid on sunday and arrived on wednesday. They also found a fifi and bumble for me as didn't advertise these.

Do they look OK lexiemum?

I did a lion cake and it was really easy

You buy ready coloured icing in orange, yellow, brown and green

Roll out most of the yellow and put on the top of the cake (face)

Roll a ball of yellow and squash a bit for the muzzel/nose

Roll the orange, some brown and rest of the yellow into a lot of little snakes and stcik rouns the face (mane)

Use the brown to make eyes and nose

Roll out the green in a long strip and zigzag (to be grass) all different lenghts then wrap around the cake

Voila a lion cake - quite cartoony like Lion King and very easy

sarah - yes they are fine and are jsut they same as those ones that are in the packet mix cake boxes. though, I've not done a trial run of applying to cake - will report back after I've made them.
