Cheap but thoughtful present?! Friend's 30th and am skint!

This is the most skint I've been in years! We're going to have to magic some money from somewhere to pay the bills at the end of the month!

But Friday is a good friend's 30th. I need to get her something, but can only spare about tenner or maybe £15! I'd be very grateful for any ideas!

I could maybe spend the money on the makings of something? I have a little time and am not too bad at making stuff.

Or, any one know of any sales?

(We're already making her a cake.)

How about a gift voucher for a beauty treatment like a manicure... They usually under £20...?

Thanks for the reply.
Maybe ... where would you get it from? (I'm clueless about that kind of stuff!)

Trying to think of what she's into ...

Shoes, Coffee, Man United, Bill Bailey, bright pink things, dressing up, changing her hair colour every few weeks, jewellery. She's in her third year of uni. She's lovely and I'm sure won't care if we haven't spent much as she knows we're skint, but I know she'll appreciate it if we've thought about it.

(If anyone here knows her they'll know exactly who I'm talking about from that description!)

We were going to get her shares in Man U, but it turns out you can't get real shares in someone else's name, and the Share Certificates you get from football clubs are "as meaningful as a share in the moon" to quote moneysavingexpert, I think it was!

I wouldn't worry so much if it wasn't her 30th, I'd just get her a little something.

But she's been anticipating turning 30 for a while, she's a lovely person and it hasn't been an easy year, this year.

I wish I had a bit more cash to spoil her! Trying to find a way of doing it without the cash!

Oh that sounds awful! Blush Blush
I must categorically state I am only after ideas, people!!

Perhaps something I could make?

How about 30 bright pink things? Some free (a flower?) some cheap(cheap kids hair clips?), some recycled from your home (erm, what crafty things do you have?) some you can make (cake) erm..can't think of more ATM but she sounds quirky and fun and if she'd appreciate the effort as much as the present then do something fun :)

Photo album? Earrings? A lovely plant? Bottle of nice sparkling wine? All can be bought for under a tenner- not the most original but she will appreciate the thought and you can write her a lovely heartfelt card.

A tree!

Seriously - an orange tree or apple tree or even a chilli plant I had one bought for me and I love it

Try plants4presents.co.uk

Ooh yes, 30 things, brilliant! I really like that.

And she is quirky and fun, you're spot on SlimJimBra :)

Good suggestions coldcupoftea, I have a spare photo album, could put some snaps of us in it, I know I've got some of my DS and her brother I know she loves.

Could get cheap jewellery for dressing up from Primark, and kids hair clips a great idea.

I've got bits and bobs in the present box (I buy tat stocking fillers when I see good stuff on sale and keep for Christmas) I could add bits from that to make up 30 things.

For my 30th, my best friend who was very skint, did a collage of photos of me and my friends with some lovely writing around the sides (stuff about me) and framed it. I still have it up on my wall and still one of my fave presents ever!

You could also do a collage of some sort of all her favourite things? Get pics from internet and cuttings from magazines, you could include things like a coffee label, and make a beautiful unique collage. Get a 2nd hand picture frame from charity shop to finish it off.

Is there going to be a celebration of any sort? If so, you could take photos of the whole event and make a photo book (loads of cheap deals for this, especially for 1st time customers, have a browse on the internet).

You could have a look for original magazines from the month/year she was born. Lots of companies do this but also have a look on ebay. Does Man U have (or did they have) a magazine? I bought an original Arsenal mag for my cousin for about £12 from the year he was born and he loved it. Look on the Man U website too.

This might be a late notice and may not work but worth a try....email Bill Bailey. Tell him about your friend and ask if he could send an email wishing her a happy birthday with one of his favourite jokes?

I remember once buying a fabric bracelet for my friend, that had been handcrafted from a vintage tie. The vintage tie was from the decade my friend's birthdate. It was from Ebay a few years ago, not sure if the seller is still around. Otherwise you could do something like that yourself.

Another idea....make a game board. A simple game, like snakes and ladders but make it personal to her, for example "forgot to buy coffee, go back three spaces" and "Man U scores a goal! forward 2 spaces" etc. The counters could be handmade with different pics on them (Bill Bailey, shoes, coffee etc) or you could look on ebay/bead shops/cake shops for small 3d objects of a shoe, a coffee cup, etc.
