DD2 is about to turn 6, she loves animals, animals are everything to her - we have dogs, cats, sheep & pigs, chickens, she likes horse riding, but I would like to find her something for her birthday that she will remember. Maybe feeding elephants, or giraffes or something - any suggestions?

Do you have a zoo nearby? Our nearest has experience days-keeper for the day etc. Not sure about age limits though!

Hi Pichu - I thought of that but sadly she'd have to be 11 (London, Whipsnade etc), and that's a mighty long time to wait for a 6yr old!

There is a 'Meet the Penguins' experience at London Zoo. You go into the penguin beach area with a keeper - my 5yo went with DH for his birthday and loved it. I'm not sure whether or not you have to be a member though.

Oh that's a shame. I'm assuming London zoo is your nearest as you mentioned it, do they run a programme of events through the day? Our nearest zoo does things like giraffe and elephant feeds throughout the day? My DS loves feeding the animals and we have managed to get some nice photos of him! I'm sorry I've no more ideas, I'm full of cold and my brain is refusing to work! Confused

Hmm I wonder if a penguin would 'count'.....If you can't stroke it, it might not qualify....6 yr olds seem to be rather tricky to please.....

Another (expensive probably) thing they do and that I dream of is one of those overnighters at Whipsnade, opposite the elephants. It's a yurt or something with amazing views of a variety of animals.

Our local city farm lets you adopt animals too and you can go and cuddle them if it's appropriate. DH adopted me a rabbit there a long time ago when we lived in a tiny flat. It was homicidal unfortunately and had to be handled with gloves...

Falconry?

Not sure you can get it in this country but mu cousin in Australia had a petting zoo brought to her house for an afternoon.

Actually with your animals mabe you could start it as a bussiness?

lentilbake · 05/06/2012 15:13

where i am you can have ponies brought to your house for rides, they can also bring tarantulas, snails etc

Incaminka · 05/06/2012 15:22

I think you can hire an alpaca in Dorset to carry your picnic on a family walk.

DS was 6 in Sep last yr and we hired a mobile pettibg zoo to come out for him and his friends. They brought a tarantula, king python, lots of other smaller snakes, giant african snails and loads of other scary different animals. DS and his friends loved it.

Only prob now is that I have to think of something for this years birthday that'll beat it Confused

How about an Animal Encounter party at home?
